Young Lawyers Section

2016-2017 General Overview

The Young Lawyers Section of the Dade County Bar Association was formed in 1952.  From its modest beginnings, the YLS now has over 1,300 members.  The YLS sponsors and implements a variety of programs for the community, the bench and the bar.  This Handbook is designed to outline the operation of the YLS, to describe existing committees, to suggest new goals and ideas, and to provide other helpful information and forms for your use. Please refer to it throughout the year.

The YLS Board of Directors consists of four (4) officers:  President, President-Elect, Secretary and Treasurer; and fourteen (14) Directors.  The officers hold one-year terms and the directors serve two-year terms that expire in alternate years.  The YLS Board meets once a month, normally on the first Tuesday of each month.

To facilitate the Board meetings and the work of the Section, there is an Executive Committee comprised of the four (4) officers and two (2) directors (one from the group elected in even years, and one from the group elected in odd years). The Executive Committee will meet on an as-needed basis.

The main work of the YLS is done through our committees.  Each committee has been assigned an officer who will act as an advisor for the committee.  The advisor will assist with questions and concerns and should be copied on committee correspondence.  This year, the Section will have the following committees: Bar Passage, CLE, Fundraising, Horizons (Girls), Judicial Outreach, Pro Bono/Community Service, Rainmakers, Schools, Social and Sports.  In addition to the committees, there are annual events planned by the YLS such as the Bids for Kids and the Judicial Reception.  Also, the YLS supports the publication of The Bulletin, although this publication has its own committee and operates independently.

You are encouraged and expected to share your ideas with the Board.  Your enthusiasm, commitment and ideas are critically important as we work to “refresh” our permanent programming, enhance our existing committees, improve our events and implement new projects and committees.

Your participation and commitment to the Young Lawyers Section is appreciated.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation and dedication in helping to make this another successful bar year.

If you have any questions, please contact Alice, Stuart or any of the officers.

This is going to be a wonderful and fun year!
