TUTORS SOUGHT FOR BAR PASSAGE PROGRAM

The Dade County Bar Association / Young Lawyers Section’s Bar Passage Program (formerly, the “Minority Bar Passage Program”) was created to increase the number of minority law school graduates who pass the Florida Bar examination. This program provides assistance and support to any graduate of the University of Miami, St. Thomas University, Florida International University, Nova Southeastern University, or any other ABA accredited law school who has registered to take the February or July Florida Bar examination. Although the program’s goals are to assist minority law school graduates, it is open to all law school graduates, regardless of race or ethnic origin. This program is available to first-time and repeat test takers.

The program focuses on providing assistance and feedback to improve writing skills on the essay portion of the bar examination. The program consists of a series of weekly mock examination, lectures, small group discussions, individual mentoring and evaluation of students’ essays. It will also provide guidance concerning effective test taking skills and mental preparedness for the bar exam. The program will not provide a review of substantive law, but is only designed to supplement commercial bar review courses. Volunteering to serve as tutors and speakers for the program are members of the Dade County Bar Association and other attorneys who are members of other bar associations.

VOLUNTEER ATTORNEY’S COMMITMENT

Each attorney-tutor is paired with between one and three students, and is responsible for critiquing each student’s bar exam practice essay or essays from the previous week, and then meeting with each student to discuss and review the practice essay. An estimate of each volunteer attorney-tutor’s time commitment is approximately ten to twelve hours. You will receive CLE credits for your participation in the program as an attorney-tutor.

The Bar Passage Program will take place at the University of Miami School of Law campus, starting at 6:30 pm on Wednesday evenings commencing on January 15, 2014, and concluding on February 12, 2014. You will need work with the student with whom you are paired to coordinate mutually agreeable dates/times for mentoring sessions, if in-person sessions are not possible.
